FOUR VESSELS BUILT FOR EXXON MOBIL CONTRACT NEAR COMPLETION

The ambitious project that had Damen Shipyards build four Multi- Function Platform Supply Vessels (MFPSV) for Atlantic Towing is near complete. The vessels were ordered to fulfill a contract Atlantic Towing entered into with Exxon Mobil for the Hibernia and Hebron fields. Two of the four vessels, the Atlantic Shrike and the Atlantic Griffon, recently went through a partial deconstruction in Cadiz, Spain, in preparation for their transport and construction completion at Halifax Shipyard. Operational assistance for the vessels’ deconstruction, loading and transport to Halifax were provided by BigLift Shipping, one of the world’s leading heavy lift ship management companies, specializing in worldwide ocean transportation of heavy lift and project cargoes.

Build of the four vessels began in January 2015, with planning for the vessels beginning long before. The four vessels are essentially the same, but the Paul A. Sacuta is five meters longer in order to fit the 100 Tonne Active Heave Compensation (AHC) crane that will be used to service the platforms.

Throughout the build, Atlantic Towing has several of its people working from Damen’s shipyards in Romania. Carl Galley, Site Team Lead with Atlantic Towing, works on-site on a five-week on, five- week off rotation.

“Being in the yard during construction ensures that we play a role in the product we have purchased, and it is an opportunity for the attending team to learn about the vessels,” says Galley. Valuable knowledge can be gained from watching the ships’ commissioning.”

“It has been a very positive experience working with Damen,” adds Galley. “They have built numerous elite vessels, and they are willing to discuss how we think certain items should be designed and implemented. The organization of production and the hard working labour force here in Galatz makes them a reputable shipyard.”

“The intention of the contract has always been to complete the two vessels in Halifax,” says Don Shepherd, Director of Technology and Development with Atlantic Towing. “In order to facilitate this
