Come and stay a while! Just as Rome was not built in a day, Venice cannot be seen in a minute. Too many people choose not to give Venice the time it deserves and use it as a day trip from other destinations. Te Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco are only a small portion of what makes Venice so special, thus time is needed for further exploration. Venice’s true beauty

shines in the early mornings and the late evenings when the crowds of day-trippers retreat out of the city. Staying overnight for a couple of days allows one to take in the magic during those times. Strolling through near-empty streets or enjoying Piazza San Marco as the sun comes up are two of life’s greatest pleasures. Even better would be to rent an apartment (there are so many wonderful properties available, check out
www.viewsonvenice.com and
www.venicerentals.com) and get to know your own neighborhood by frequenting a local green grocer, coffee bar and bakery. Venetians have a keen sense of memory; stop in the same place a couple of days in a row and you will be greeted like a regular for the remainder of your visit.
Toss the map! Remember that Venice is an island, so you can’t get too lost! It’s definitely easy to get turned around, but never lost! Te key to maneuvering around Venice with ease is to know some landmarks. Even Ve- netians give instructions based on landmarks because many of the street names are not widely memorized by everyone and the civic numbering system was put into place at the beginning of the 19th century for adminis- trative purposes. Remembering that your hotel is near the Accademia, Piazza San Marco or the train station will serve you well as you wind your way through the city. Maps are excellent for orientation, but surprises abound when one lets their feet do the walking off the beaten path. If eliminating the map is not your style, make a compromise. Make it to your destination, the Naval Museum in Castello for example, and then al- low time to explore the surrounding area, perhaps

walking to your next spot using only your senses. It’s moments like this where you might stumble upon a fabulous wine bar that you had only read about (El Refolo,
www.elrefolo.it) and proceed to enjoy some of the tastiest mini sandwiches in the city, washed down with a refreshing aperol spritz. Leaving some things to chance in Venice often yields the greatest rewards.

Climb as high as you can! Tis is excellent advice in any Italian city because the views are so incredible. Venice rewards your effort to go as high as possible not only with breathtaking views in every direction, but with an easy elevator ride to the top! Te eleva- tor in the Bell Tower in Piazza San Marco is a wel- come sight for sore knees. After only a few minutes up to the top, gaze out over the Venetian lagoon, look to the Adriatic Sea just beyond the Lido island,
