environmental as well as financial savings.”

At Steve Vick International the focus is very much on sustainability as a key business approach to create long term value. The organisation takes into consideration how it operates ecologically, socially and economically and has worked hard in achieving both the Constructionline and ISO 14001:2015 accreditations. These accreditations underpin the commitment of the company to protect the environment and prevent pollution.

The company operates several initiatives including LED light bulbs in all offices, vans with the latest green credentials for their engines, car sharing where possible (on hold during Covid), recycling stations and electrical vehicle charging stations at the offices. The company will also be installing solar panels over the

coming months which will provide power to the offices. In addition, SVI have opened depots across the country in order to offer a more local service and to help reduce travel.

Sean Noonan, operations director at Steve Vick International, commented: “We are constantly looking for ways to improve on our sustainable credentials and it’s not only the sustainability of our organisation that matters, we also include sustainability as a key feature in the design of our products. Our Hexi Trailer, for example, reduces wastage for gas and water companies of up to 20 per cent and our trenchless technologies significantly reduce the amount of spoil that needs to be taken to landfill as our techniques require much smaller trenches to be dug than more traditional methods.”

The carbon question

Central to the conversation about sustainability is the concept of embodied carbon. Even the most sustainable new materials in the drainage industry have an embodied carbon footprint. It’s unavoidable. Embodied carbon is quite literally built into a product during its manufacture and installation as it is the carbon emitted during the manufacturing and construction processes. Once the product is installed, it already has a significant carbon footprint, which cannot be erased or reduced. This embodied carbon can represent over half of the whole-life carbon emissions from a new product.

It’s perhaps easy to understand the concept of embodied carbon, but more difficult to formulate a plan to mitigate and reduce it
