Barclays looks to boost Brits’ digital skills

Barclays is to open up under-utilised spaces in its branches and offices with the launch of Eagle Labs. The UK bank will give cus- tomers and non-customers in local busi- nesses and communities the opportuni- ty to learn about new digital technologies and technique. The Labs will be supported by Barclays’ Digital Eagles, with a Lab Man- ager and technician on hand to provide support and guidance. MakerSpaces will offer access to 3D printers and laser cutters, providing businesses with access to the tools to produce and test prototypes with- out having to import from overseas; Incu- bators, meanwhile, will specifically target high-growth firms and entrepreneurs pro- jecting 20% growth or more. Following pilots in Bournemouth and

Cambridge, a third Eagle Lab is opening on the site of a disused Barclays branch in Brighton and there are plans to introduce up to 20 more, including in Birmingham and Huddersfield. The initiative will also be available to community groups, hobbyists, children, students and the elderly. Ashok Vaswani, CEO of Barclays UK,

says: “Bankers have traditionally been at the heart of the community, supporting people with their finances, and helping local businesses to grow. Our Eagle Labs initiative is reaffirming that core communi- ty role by enabling people to embrace new and emerging technology. We are passion- ate about helping individuals build digital

skills and confidence which is key to help- ing the UK to thrive in this digital age. The roll-out of Eagle Labs is a natural extension of our work to support this aim through

Barclays, claims Smith, took three years to complete the transfer. “To say that the service the claimant and Terry received from

Investment tycoon Terry Smith is suing Barclays Bank for its “atro- cious” customer service and poor transfer services. Smith, who manages more than £5 billion through his various ventures, has filed a legal claim based around “repeated” failed attempts to move his money around, something which he claims has cost him £220,000.

Barclays Bank was atrocious is an understatement,” a spokes- person for Smith says. “Aethelflaed is compelled to pursue this action and looks forward to hearing the court’s decision.” Barclays has claimed that Smith was, “contributorily negli-

gent in failing to make the payment order in a branch with iden- tifications as required. We cannot comment on a matter which is currently in litigation, save to confirm that we will be vigorously defending this case.”
