IBS Journal April 2016

Showing some online appreciation Carl Beetham, Business Advisor, tibit, talks to IBS Journal about getting the

micro-rewards venture up and running, and changing apathetic minds whilst living in the here and now

IBS Journal: Tell us about yourself? Carl Beetham: Focused on establishing digital donation and small content payment as a normal, everyday activity, tibit has been two years in the build and is now in ‘soft launch’ mode. With the number of user sites steadily growing it appears micro-rewards are finally here to stay. Bringing the concept of ‘pocket- change’ to the internet, we are determined to establish tibs as the token of your appreciation online.

IBS Journal: What’s your business model? CB: Via the development of an innovative, highly engaging social platform, tibit is pioneering a new method of monetisation within several business and societal areas including publishing, bloggers/vloggers/ YouTubers, free/open source and freemium software vendors, charities and worthy causes and creative media. tibit software, including all plug-ins,

is fully free and open source. Critically, we don’t sell or monetise software in any way as we have a service that we monetise by charging 2p/3c for each tib donation made. The whole remainder of the donation, reward or content payment goes to the receiver.

IBS Journal: What sets you apart? CB: Undoubtedly it’s our focus on the psychological barriers that have prevented a viable micro-rewards solution from achieving success earlier. The tech behind tibit is relatively simple but our unique patented product concentrates on the emotional triggers within the process, removing any disruptive ‘noise’ which may prevent the completion of the transaction.

Imagine a supporter, reader or user being able to show their appreciation with just a simple click on a tib button? With tibit it’s a reality.

The tech behind the process allows

us to transact on Bitcoin rails but, crucially, use either traditional currency or Bitcoin to purchase the tibs. This keeps costs for everyone to an absolute minimum and ensures an easy path to successful completion.

IBS Journal: Who or what inspired you to set the compa- ny up? CB: To solve the seemingly perennial

problem of how to make online content payment and digital donation work in a universally accepted fashion. Our inspira- tion is to build a simple and intuitive mech- anism for people to reward ‘little and often’ in a highly valued and meaningful manner, and to ensure this doesn’t compete, but complements and co-exists with other forms of support and revenue generation. Subscription paywalls, click-bait headlines and ad-swamp have a lot to answer for! Personally speaking, there’s usually a

high level of ego in setting up a company and we’re no different in this regard. Oh, and there’s a story of an Auckland busker that I can regale you with sometime, that the whole idea stems from...

IBS Journal: What has been your smartest move? CB: Undoubtedly our focus on the

cognitive elements of the transaction and the subsequent process of allowing the tibber to set their own value of reward, authenticate this and purchase a bundle before being faced with the decision to reward. Enabling reward without a second’s thought, in a habitual manner will be
