EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SCOTT MCCABE 83

“Looking Forward to What The Year Has In Store” – NI Travel News Speaks with Oasis’ Scott McCabe

BY ERIN ENGLISH erin@nitravelnews.com

NI Travel News’ Erin English caught up with Scott McCabe, Project Director at Oasis Travel to discuss Scott’s recent inclusion on TTG’s Thirty Under Thirty list, celebrating the rising stars of the Travel Trade. How does it feel to be included on TTG’s 30 under 30 list? It’s a real honour, we had our first meet up

a couple of weeks ago in London, just to meet everybody and get to know the calibre of the individuals included. I was shocked to be included actually but it’s a real pleasure. I’m really looking forward to what the year has in store. They took us through a session where they went through some of the past classes and previous individuals who have been involved, along with what they’ve gone on to achieve in their careers. So I’m delighted to be involved and excited to see what’s in store. What advice

would you offer young people

wanting to become involved in the travel industry? I think it’s something, especially for me, that no amount of theory really can equip you for what’s involved. I think we’ve seen over the past two years with the pandemic, that you just need to learn by doing. Every opportunity, whether it’s the opportunity to network with new people, engage in training opportunities, explore via fam trips or work opportunities, just go for it. If it’s something that you are passionate about, it’s something that you just have to dive into and you’ll definitely get the rewards from it.

What drives you to success?

I wouldn’t really say I’ve had too much success yet, i’m still young and starting out but I’ve got a really good group around me here at Oasis Travel, who always push me and make me excited to come to work everyday. I just think that they are people who are experienced in the industry and have a lot of knowledge, and they inspire me to learn as much as I can and to be the best person I can be for the travel industry. Just being part of the thirty under thirty, it shows that a lot of people can have success when they are young,

if you are willing to work hard enough. The group around me, in that sort of cohort, really do inspire me as well.

How does post covid recovery look for Oasis Travel?

Post-covid recovery, it’s going really well in terms of we are back to pretty much pre- pandemic levels of sales which is great on one instance. But of course, it brings with it a lot of extra work for the staff, who are delighted to be busy again and booking holidays, which is what they love to do. A lot more comes now with the preparation to get clients ready to travel but also the uncertainty sometimes that we have to deal with. Being able to adapt and be flexible, and know that if someone books a holiday with us, we want to get the idea across that your holiday is safe with us. We need to continually go above and beyond, and try to do as much as we can to let people know their holiday will be safe and stress-free. Post-Covid recovery is going well but we just hope that we continue along this road. It’s a long way back at the end of the day but I believe we are on the right path.

What do you believe the future looks like for the travel industry? Definitely business models will evolve over time, that’s for sure. What that looks like exactly I’m not sure. It’s going to be interesting to see what the younger demographic are interested in, because everybody now is keen to try and look online and compare a lot of different options which is fine. But I still believe that there is scope for a hybrid option that allows people the option of of course, pricing holidays online if they want to and using digital methods to plan their holidays. But I think that needs to be underpinned by a human service that actually gives people reliability and that they can travel with confidence. They need to know that if they book their holiday through a travel agent or a trusted travel provider, whether they do that digitally or via human interaction that they are going to get the holiday that they deserve and that they’ve paid for but also that’s it’s financially protected and it’s safe and secure. So, the answer to the question is that I’m not fully sure what the future looks like but I definitely believe that it’s a mix of digitalisation and still that fundamental human connection.
