Brexit has also brought the talks of Irish and
British passports to the forefront of everyday discussions, as citizens in Northern Ireland now, more than ever, see that their choice in passport makes a difference to their everyday lives.
Due to the Good Friday Agreement, citizens living in Northern Ireland can choose whether to identify as British, Irish or both, depending on what they please, thanks to
the introduction of dual citizenship. With this, Northern Ireland does not hold its own passport, and therefore citizens may chose between either an Irish or British passport if they are wanting to travel abroad. This was never really a major issue as both British and Irish citizens shared many of the same visa rules and regulations across the world- This was before Brexit. Now, Brexit has brought passports into the public domain in
Northern Ireland, fuelling arguments
around why one passport is better than the other, and vice versa.
Northern Irish British passport holders will see the introduction of EU visa fees as they travel to the EU this coming year. From
November 2023, British travellers will be able to apply for an ETIAS visa waiver to enter all EU countries.
