30 THE BIG EVENT - CHARITY BALLOT
Charity ballot helps change young Cavan’s life
THE charity ballot at The Big Travel Trade Event organised by Northern Ireland Travel News at the Hilton, Templepatrick, last week raised a total of £2,500 for the 'Cavan's First Steps' fundraising campaign. The money was raised at the Blue Insurance Alternative Awards held following the spectacularly successful two-day exhibition and Northern Ireland Travel Golf Classic.
Former Northern Ireland Travel News journalist Emma Deighan (now Emma O'Neill) has been campaigning for the past year to raise £80,000 to take her young son Cavan to the USA in a bid to help him walk. Cavan suffers from the debilitating cerebral palsy condition called Spastic Diplegia. He can't walk because of the tight muscle tone and spasticity caused by the condition. Said Emma: "What a wonderful response from the local Travel Trade! Ever since we launched the campaign I have been amazed at the generosity of people from all walks of life in Northern Ireland. We are very grateful to Travel News for choosing to support the campaign to help Cavan walk through fundraising at The Big Event, and to all those of course from the local travel industry who contributed so generously on the night. "When we launched the campaign last autumn I knew it would be very difficult to raise such an amount of money in less than a year, but now we are within touching distance of our £80,000 target. One thing is sure now, Cavan will be going to St Louise Children's Hospital in Missouri for a life- changing operation later this year."
