French tourism medal for John
NORTHERN Ireland Travel News Columnist John Trew is to be awarded the ‘Medaille du Tourisme' at a special presentation in Belfast by Agnes Angrand of Atout France, the French Tourist Board, on behalf of the French Minister of Tourism.
The Tourism Medal is described as “an honorary award for outstanding and valuable professionalism, either in France or abroad, to those who have contributed throughout their career to the development of tourism in France.” John’s popular Trew’s Travels column, which has recently celebrated its 250th appearance in our pages over the past quarter-century, regularly features
holiday destinations in
France. “I have always believed Ernest Hemingway’s assertion that everyone loves two countries — their own and France,” says John. happily contributed more than 50 million euros to French tourism.”
He was astonished when he received the news of the accolade, which is rarely awarded outside France. “It was on my 75th birthday and I thought it was a spoof from a friend until I saw it was written by Agnes Angrand herself.”

ABTA moved swiftly to reassure the Travel Trade and the UK Travelling Public in the wake of the Brexit vote, saying in a statement: "Travellers are as free to move between the UK and the EU as they were before the referendum, European Health Insurance cards remain valid and regulations such as Air Passenger Rights remain in place.
“The Prime Minister has stated that there will be no initial change in the way people travel. Travellers are as free to move between the UK and the EU as they were before the vote, European Health Insurance cards remain valid and regulations such as Air Passenger Rights are still valid. “People due to travel this summer will see little changes to their holiday. Once the UK formally notifies the EU of its intention to leave, the remaining Member States will have up to two years to offer the UK a deal for a future trading relationship, and during this period holidaymakers will not see any immediate changes.
“However, the fall in value of the pound will have an immediate impact on holidaymakers and their spending power overseas. Britons will get less bang for their pound when they head to the continent for a break, a beach holiday or even to the US.”

The pound sterling plummeted immediately after the referendum result, hitting its weakest level against the US dollar in 30 years. But after the initial shock the pound stablised against the dollar and euro and has even made modest gains. Britons can continue to take out money at cash points as normal while on holiday, said ABTA. However, UK travellers' loss is others’ gain. The pound’s loss of value is benefiting foreign visitors to the UK, including citizens of EU member states, Americans, Canadians and Australians, whose currencies have strengthened against sterling. When Brexit is triggered the UK government must also negotiate an open skies arrangement for UK airlines similar to that which applies at the moment, and of course obtain protection for consumers rights when the withdrawal from the UK takes place.
