makeup are more than adequate, and the payoff moments work quite well. And on that note, it deserves to be pointed out that Galindo beat Dario Argento to the punch—just before OPERA— with a shot of a victim’s tongue being skewered by a demonic murder weapon thrust under the chin (though not in extreme closeup) as the climax heats up. This isn’t a film with an “all bet- ter” happy ending for those who believe in them, but the hopeful, understated final note is quite well-conceived, all the same. Contemporary American audi- ences would probably have pre- ferred GRAVE ROBBERS in a Stateside release, but DON’T PANIC remains a respectable border crossing all the same. (It enjoyed US video release un- der this title and as SATAN’S BLOOD.)


The shorter running time of the English-language version is most likely the result of a PAL master conversion, as DON’T PANIC and Dimensiones Ocultas appear to be identi- cal to the shot. The Spanish dub,

while not strictly necessary here, as it turns out, contains some interesting flukes all the same. For some reason, words which translate in the subtitles as “drunk” or “sissy” are deliberately erased from the soundtrack (too often to be a coincidence)—and we’ll never know what Spanish


BCI went on to release a sec- ond volume of “Crypt of Terror”: HORROR FROM SOUTH OF THE BORDER, consisting of older, more familiar titles: NIGHT OF THE BLOODY APES, CURSE OF THE DOLL PEOPLE, SPIR- ITISM, WRESTLING WOMEN VS. THE AZTEC MUMMY and DOCTOR OF DOOM. The an- nounced Poe anthology MAS- TERWORKS OF HORROR was replaced at the last minute by THE NEW INVISIBLE MAN, al- legedly due to copyright con- flicts. Collectors will certainly want this set, as well, but it’s the largely uncharted VOLUME ONE material that comes with the highest recommendation.
