the beaten path as Dr. Cardan arrives—too late to save the mis- chief-makers, but still serving as the stalwart protector of the young, innocent trick-or-treaters from the encroaching zombie army. Unlike most movie zom- bies, these Clark-influenced ghouls receive their supernatural energy from the power of Satan, so they can be repelled by the Christian cross, for one thing... The influences may be clear, but CEMETERY OF TERROR makes the necessary effort to exist on its own terms and remains wor- thy of notice. Incidentally, the camaraderie of the Galindos and the Cardonas has never been more evident: Stiglitz, of course, is a Cardona staple (NIGHT OF A THOUSAND CATS, etc.), Andres Garcia, Jr. (son of the star of
Cardona, Jr.’s TINTORERA, et al) is on hand, and Rene Cardona III puts in an appearance (un- der his own name, this time). And for the record, the “worn but watchable” print on display here complements the ideal “late show” vibe in ways the director probably didn’t anticipate. Dynamic Films and Grupo Galindo struck again with 1989’s Ladrones de Tumbas, offered on Disc 3, Side A under the lit- eral English translation GRAVE ROBBERS. The title characters are another group of young adults (led by Ernesto Laguardia as Manolo) who routinely appro- priate what treasures they can find on the bodies of the recently deceased. Their latest expedition causes them to stumble upon the secret tomb of an official
Inquisitor who had been executed via holy battle axe when caught trying to father the son of Satan himself after his seduction to the dark side. The youths happily loot the incredibly valuable jackpot of gold and jewels they find in the tomb—helping themselves to the battle axe in the process, and a vengeful zombie is soon on their trail, raising literal Hell on the unsuspecting populace in the meantime.
GRAVE ROBBERS ranks as the definitive Mexican horror thriller to be found in the collec- tion. There’s grisly ’80s gore to spare, including a show-stopping “stomach-burster” gag when the undead Inquisitor supernaturally crashes a jail cell in order to re- trieve some ill-gotten gold worn by one of the perpetrators, there’s
Call Hugo Stiglitz! She’s face-to-face with zombie horror in CEMETERY OF TERROR.
