Vince: That’s what really gets me. Instead of saying, ‘Oh this is Vince and this is Lynn.’

Lynn: But then you’ve got other parents, and we know other parents because of the World Cup in Germany, and they thrive on it.

Vince: When reporters come by, it’s ‘Ahh!! Give our son a good write up and I’ll buy you a bottle of something!’

Lynn: And I look and I can see that sometimes certain players can stand out, and you don’t know Michael’s there because he’s that kind of player. He does his job, he does what he’s told to do. And sometimes he’s got more in his locker. Michael we feel like kicking you up your backside sometimes, I’m sure you’ve got more in your tank. And he has, but that’s just the way that he is. He does what he has to do. But then there’s other players and they have got a little bit more get up and go, a bit more selfish. And I think, have we held him back a little bit too much?

Somebody said to me, ‘Michael will never get anywhere,’ this is when he was in nursery, ‘because you won’t let him push in.’ And I said, ‘He’ll learn to do that himself.’ And he did. There medals when they’d won something. One of the lads had left the club to do something else.

But then he decided he wanted to come back to the boys club because he wasn’t winning medals elsewhere. And this particular lad was stood in behind the captain and Michael was at the end because Michael was never pushing to get a medal because you always got one in the end. And he didn’t get one… they ran out. And that’s the only time. And I was more mad I think than Michael. Because I thought this lad has left to go elsewhere and he’s only come back for the final. And thinking if that had been my son, ‘Come on, stand back.’ And that’s when he learnt, and that’s when he was 14 or something. And that’s when he learnt that you don’t have to be at the back. He learnt for himself. People were saying you’ve got to be pushy to get anywhere. You don’t have to be pushy. And Michael learnt. He’s never at the back now. I laugh you know, at the Champions League he wasn’t at the back, he was at the front! And we laugh at things like that.
