Michael: You know people like Chris who went on to play super league, and rugby for Great Britain. A couple of my best mates played rugby league, one went to Hartlepool. So even in that small year group you’ve probably got 5 or 6… Although Chris played super league, he played football just as much. Just as much as me probably and then instead of playing 11-a-side for the boys club he played rugby at weekends. It was a really good environment to come into.

Three went and played super league for Gateshead at the time and one signed for Hull. I wouldn’t say we were great, but to have them all in the same year group, in the one team, made us a good team for different sports.

Graeme: I played rugby league for the North East against the South East, played at Wembley before the World Cup Final in ‘95 when I was about 11. And not because, again not really loving rugby but you get picked so you go and play at Wembley. It’s like ‘oh right’… That’s how it was, sport was big wasn’t it?

Michael: Yeah it was. But it was just a total love for football wasn’t it?

Graeme: Yeah. Enjoy other sports but loved football.
