Application Burns and reconstructive treatments Cambridge-based Avita Medical has launched a new device that increases the skin treatment size by up to six times, offering much greater flexibility and a cheaper cost for clinics and hospitals where the device is used for burns and reconstructive procedures. The ReCell® device enables clinicians to rapidly create a Regenerative Epithelial Suspension™(RES) — the active element in Avita's products — by using just a small sample of the patient’s skin. It can be used alone or in conjunction with conventional treatments for burns and reconstructive procedures. The technology provides epithelial cells and their associated wound healing factors to the treatment area. The device now allows medics to treat 1,920cm2
of
burn wounds which is six times greater than what was previously possible. All of this is achieved using a skin sample just 1/80th of the size of the treatment area. Treatments that include the use of ReCell® can achieve early definitive closure and superior outcomes with less donor skin. Furthermore, the regenerated skin has a superior appearance compared with meshed autograft alone, as RES™ regenerates skin in the mesh interstices (very small spaces), blending the mesh pattern across the graft. A small sample of healthy skin is taken from the patient. The sample cells will then be separated using the ReCell® device to produce a RES™ which contains the multiple skin cell types and their associated growth factors that are necessary to promote healthy skin growth, including keratinocyte and fibroblast cells that form the basis of healthy skin and melanocytes that produce skin colour (melanin). The cells are processed while the doctor prepares the area to be treated and are then sprayed directly onto the treatment area. Once applied, the cells then multiply and spread throughout the skin, promoting the regeneration of natural healthy skin.
