BUILDING DESIGN

A typical ward layout.

organisational needs of the hospital, seeking a human, personal approach, a sense of wellbeing and privacy for patients. The future centre for Maternity and

Infancy in Reggio Emilia (MIRE) will have a maternity ward, neonatal intensive care, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology departments. It will also have research and training facilities, ensuring they are all available under one roof and freeing up space in the main hospital building, which can then be upgraded and the organisation of services optimised. The second main entrance to the

hospital could be added between the two new buildings, allowing access from the south. This would create space for reception areas in a foyer and a planned basement level auditorium that could be used by people from CORE and MIRE, especially as these centres are at the

heart of the research side of the hospital. This reorganisation of the hospital would shift the operational heart of the facility to the most recently built sections, around the emergency and urgent care centre, as it is better suited and more flexible for housing wards, allowing the older sections to be used for offices, laboratories and reception areas.

Conclusion Building CORE made it necessary to revise the roads and pathways around the hospital, with these changes incorporated into the greater reorganisation and development plan for the complex. Creating a new roundabout to the south at the rear of the main entrance was considered the best way to provide direct, specific access to A&E. These new internal roads, solely for traffic heading to A&E, will link to the entrance off Via Benedetto

Croce so that it connects directly to the existing roads and the entrance to A&E, the cancer emergency centre (soon to open) and the obstetric emergency centre, which will be in the future MIRE building. The end result will be a substantial

change to how the hospital is organised, shifting the heart of the complex south and moving the healthcare services out of the old building, which will be used for offices and ancillary services. There will be two entrances - the old one on Viale Risorgimento and the new one. The latter will provide direct access to the new structures, largely housing healthcare services. In addition, the reorganisation of the internal road system will ensure separation of flows, an opportunity to sort out buildings that no longer fit into the overall design and more green areas and trees.
