on construction and the success of the plant. Dumoulin used his PowerPoint presentation to illustrate a series of well-chosen examples from practice. He invited the audience to decide which tunnel door out of the four examples was the ‘good’ choice; which ventilation system is suitable for the compost phase shown; and which photo shows a phase 1 aeration system that can’t possibly work, because the pressure isn’t right, or the pipes cannot be sprayed clean. This educational and sometimes amusing quiz element of the lecture, which Rene Teuben of Hoving also contributed to, was very thought-provoking.
Mushrooms everywhere The audience then had an opportunity for a Q&A session with the speakers. As usual, what they asked was often too general and not specific enough - such as “Is there a fungicide I can use against flies that doesn’t make my mushrooms discolour?” Here the experts often had to guess what the real situation was and suggest a possible solution. One grower asked whether
it was possible to make compost and grow mushrooms in Mongolia if the temperatures are sub-zero all year round. The panel members were able to reassure him: as long as parameters such as moisture content, indoor facilities and heating/cooling are in order, you can make compost and grow mushrooms everywhere. Whether the operational costs make it a profitable exercise, is another matter!

GTM at the Zhangzhou fair
Zhejiang Hongye Equipment Techno- logy Co., Ltd. (GTM) had one of the bigger booths at the Chinese Mushroom Days trade fair, where some 90 companies presented themselves. GTM was founded in 2013. According to sales manager Tommy (second from right in the picture), in the beginning, GTM had a ‘going out, bringing in’ policy, meaning that director Mr Vito (to the left in the picture) visited many button mushroom producing countries with his technical staff, to learn more on advanced technology in this field. Since 2014, the company produces headfillers, blocking machines et cetera, which, according to the com- pany, can meet international quality standards, ‘while the cost for these machines in China is only one third of comparable imported machines’. With the help of international experts, GTM moved on and began constructing modern bunkers, tunnels and growing rooms as well. Meanwhile the company signed a long-term strategic partner- ship agreement with Dutch control system manufacturer AEM and Panbo company, to to improve the quality and to be able to offer a full range of solutions for customers. Today, GTM exports to the United States, Canada, and Europe.
