tips and was followed with many questions from the audience. Yet another example that the Polish producers are increasingly interested in extending their offer.
Lepista nuda and shiitake Lepista nuda is an exotic mushroom, spawned in the phase II compost and not easy to grow, according to cultivation expert of CNC Exotic Mushrooms - Geert Derks. He presented the results of a study he conducted regarding the cultivation of that mushroom. The goal was to compare the growing methods recommended in the few available written resources and growing practise. Big differences were found between these. Is Lepista nuda a practical choice? The answer is not easy, the mushroom is common on the French market but there are only three growers in The Netherlands. One has to decide whether you want to take up the challenge. Less and less exotic in Europe is shiitake, which does not need long recommendations according to Calvo. The mushroom has a big potential in preventing cancer and other illnesses, contains plenty of Vitamin D and selenium, and has a taste popular among chefs. The growing process is not very difficult but incubation is totally different from other
mushrooms. In the audience was the best known producer of shiitake in Poland, Mrs Krystyna Drzażdżyńska from Jutrosin, who cooperates closely with Holpol in supplying shiitake substrate that gets incubated in the Holpol premisses and who has for many years been very active in promoting these healthy and delicious mushrooms in Poland.
Sonic
After Piotr Hamrol presented the extensive offer of Holpol substrates incubated with exotic varieties there was time to introduce the new carrier for pleurotus supplied by Sylvan. Accor- ding to Calvo, Sonic assures quicker spawn run and in result less infections and higher yields. The millet used in the new carrier enables more inoculation points and doesn’t require any extra equipment. The dosage is the same as for other spawns. Due to its adhesive consistency it is recommended to add up some gypsum or calcium. One of the pleurotus producers - Mr Tomasz Poniatowski, the owner of the company Sal - invited the audience to visit his farm after lunch and see his crops on the new carrier Sonic as well as the traditionally grown pleurotus. Before the farm visit, a nice lunch was served in the conference venue.
