HLP study trip Spain 2016 (2)
Since the foundation of the Hessische Landwirtschaftgruppe Pilzanbau (HLP), the annual trip to visit international colleagues has become a tradition. A tradition only truly becomes a tradition if it is repeated, so in September, our destination - just like 2005 - was Spain. This is the second and concluding part of this report.

fter our visit to the Agruset affiliates, we continued our trip through Spain and visited the CTICH research centre, also located in Autol, the centre of mushroom growing in the Rioja region. Director Margarita María Pérez Clavijo and María Luisa Tello Martin, exotic mushroom specialist, greeted us on arrival. The ‘Centro Tecnológico de Investigatción del Champiñón de La Rioja’ (CTICH) was founded in 2003 to stimulate the mushroom growing sector in La Rioja. Accounting for more than 50% of the production of mushrooms and exotics, La Rioja is the major growing region. The CTICH’s objective is promoting research and technologi- cal developments, and improving quality and production levels. It is essentially a practical research centre, where mushroom growers are board members who have a say in the research programme. A total of 12 people work at the centre, and they publish a quarterly trade
journal. The centre is funded through contribu- tions based on a percentage of the tons of compost sold by the various substrate cooperati- ves in Rioja. For a very small fee, affiliated members can have their products analysed at the centre for moisture, nitrogen, carbon and ammonia contents. Since a few years ago, the centre has also been equipped to perform NIR analysis and offers a modern facility where cultivation trials can be run.

Ramon Vallondo The next stop on our list was the largest exotic mushroom grower in Spain: Ramon Vallondo. This member of the Vallondo dynasty represents the third generation in this mushroom-growing family. His main specialism in recent years has been oyster mushrooms, shiitake and eryngii. Each week in La Mazorra, 30 tons of mushrooms are produced of which 18 tons oyster mushrooms, 10 tons shiitake, two tons eryngii
