Dr. Argyropoulos and Trafoon I
n Mushroom Business 79 we published an article entitled ‘Trafoon benefits exo- tic mushroom growers’ in which Anton Sonneberg was cited as the author. Unfor- tunately, the name of Dr. Dimitrios Argyro- poulos as author had not been included, while he has been so closely involved in the Trafoon project. So we include some background on his research work here.
Dr. Argyropoulos is currently working as Researcher (Institute of Agricultural Enginee- ring) and Project Manager (Research Center for Bioeconomy) at the University of Hohen- heim in Stuttgart, Germany. He was born in Greece, completed his BSc studies in Biosys- tems Engineering and moved to Stuttgart for postgraduate studies in Agricultural Sciences with a fellowship from the State Scholarships Foundation/IKY. During his MSc studies in ‘Environmental Protection & Agricultural Food Production’ at the University of Hohen- heim, he conducted his thesis on ‘Drying behavior of mushrooms’. After completing the MSc, he joined the group of Agricultural
Engineering in the Tropics and Subtropics, a leading group working on renewable energy supply systems and postharvest techno- logy. He was awarded PhD at University of Hohenheim, for research on ‘Model-based investigation of drying processes for medi- cinal plants and mushrooms’. With his mul- tidisciplinary and broad-spectrum expertise, he conducts fundamental as well as applied research. As postharvest processes such as drying are especially energy intensive, this forms a special research focus. Research on eco-smart drying technologies and quality of mushrooms are major activities. Specifi- cally, research interests include: mushroom drying process analysis, mushroom quality characterization, vitamin D enrichment of mushrooms with natural/artificial UV-light, mushroom product development and appli- cation of non-destructive imaging tech- niques. To support knowledge transfer to practice, results are verified and adjusted in applied research. The combination of basic and applied research, frequently in coopera- tion with industry, enables the development
of innovative technologies ready for market. Using national and international collabora- tions, Argyropoulos participated in several German and EU funded projects. In the framework of the Trafoon EU-Pro- ject – ‘Traditional Food Network to improve the transfer of knowledge for innovation’, he was responsible for the improvement of technology transfer from research to SMEs involved in the mushroom industry. The close collaboration with industrial partners and in this particular case with an SME from Greece ‘Dirfis Mushrooms’ led to the deve- lopment of innovative dried mushroom pro- ducts, naturally-enriched with vitamin D in a sustainable way using a low-cost solar drying technology. The end product was presented at the joint closing TRADEIT/TRAFOON confe- rence titled – ‘Open to Innovation: Networks for the sustainability of Traditional Food Sec- tor in Europe’ this October in Brussels, and it represents a successful open innovation case.
