NEWS Chinese Spring Summit & Expo C

EFA (China Edible Fungi Association) will host the ‘China Mushroom Industry Summit and Spring Expo 2016’ in the International Exhibition Center in Lianyungang City,

China, March 18-20, 2016.

In recent years, the development of the edible fungi market in China has experienced significant progress.

There are three main business models: small-scale family production using traditional techniques; farmers cooperative production; and large-scale modernized industrial production. The last model has the largest potential, but there are still some bottlenecks impacting the development of the industry, such as structural excess of production capacity, lack of professional technical talent and experienced plant managers and relatively high financing costs.

The summit agenda revolves around these challenges and aims to create a communication platform for the public and private sector to find solutions and facilitate cooperation. The invited guests will include ranking officials from the government, and foreign ambassadors, company executives and industry experts, and investers.

The national development strategy of ‘One Belt and One Road’ has provided the possibilities for the Chinese edible fungi industry to ‘go global’. China is considered the largest producer in terms of scale, but not a leading country in terms of its market influence. There is room

for improvement of its production mode, R&D, species development and deep processing, and ‘One Belt..’ contributes to this goal. The government of Lianyungang sees the edible fungi industry as an important force to improve the industrial structure and increase farmers’ income. That’s why this year’s CEFA Industry Summit and Spring Expo will be held here.

Programme

There will be various meetings and seminars held for CEFA members. In eight sub-forums, experts and leaders from China and abroad will share and discuss investment trends and and development opportu- nities for the edible fungi industry. At the Summit, the report ‘2015 China Edible Fungi Industrialized Production Development Trend’ will be released, which is the only official report with comprehensive industry information and data, as well as industry challenges and opportunities. Furthermore, there will be cooking demonstrations and roundtable discussions.

The expected attendance exceeds 1000 visitors, and around 150 booths will fill the fair floor. There is also a company visit programme on March 20th, which features visits to Guoxin (see MB74), Xingrushi and Yuguan mushroom farms (see MB73).

Doeke Faber passed away D

oeke Faber, former chairman of the VPN (Dutch Mushroom Growers’ Association) died on Monday Janu- ary 4th after a long battle with cancer.

Faber chaired the VPN from it’s founding in 2001 untill it’s liquida- tion in 2005, when ZLTO took over as branche organisation for the edible mushroom growers in The Netherlands. The functioning of VPN was hampered by a lack of financial backing (contribution) and internal discussions. The strong element of the VPN, according to Faber back then, was the fact that the big composters were part of the organisation. “But that was also the weakest link.” His work as VPN chairman was only one of his many, many activities though. He was mainly known as the president of the International Associ- ation of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) and chairman of the Dutch Association of Flower Auctions (VBN). A veteran horticulture lobbyist pur sang, he was known as a warm-hearted and kind person, and made Officer of the Order of Oranje Nassau by Queen Beatrix in 2009.
