computer and the climate unit is important when creating a stable climate. There are huge diff erences in the type of growing room and climate installati- ons, so it doesn’t follow naturally that the climate computer is able to create a stable climate. In the end, the various components, i.e. inlets, on the climate unit, will have to be controlled depending on the available capacities and the dimensions of the growing room. This clearly means it is impossi- ble to pre-set ideal standard settings – instead the settings have to be optimised to suit each individual situation to realise a stable climate. suming and risky business, as these changes have a far reaching eff ect on the controls of the climate computer. This should preferably be left to experienced experts. These settings are sometimes entered by the installer after the installation has been started up. Close examination of the graphs showing the control values and measured values (data which is preferably sampled and collected very few minutes), can reveal any fl uctuations and once the cause has been identifi ed the infl uences and inlet controls can be modifi ed to arrive at a stable climate.


How can a grower see if the controls are stable? Firstly, it is important to check whether the control values remain stable. If the computer keeps requesting other control values, it is virtually impossible for the inlet controls to adjust accordingly. Fluctuating control values are often a consequence of incorrect infl uence settings such as: compost temperature infl uence on air temperature, air temperature infl uence on inlet temperature, RH infl uence on CO2 etc. If the control values are fairly stable, but the measured values fl uctuate widely, the problem is the inlet control settings. Summarised: if the infl uences are incorrectly set, the control values will fl uctuate and the air inlets will follow this pattern. First adjust the infl uence values until the control values stabilise. If subsequently the measured values still vary too much around the control values, the inlet control settings should then be adjusted. The inlet control value and measured air inlet temperature in particular are clear indicators of the stability of the climate control. It goes without saying that a stable climate not only leads to stable evaporation, but also to lower energy consumption.


Trichoderma in compost


The cause of a green mould, or Trichoderma strain, infection is often diffi cult to identify. However, the compost is frequently the culprit. This still leaves the question: what went wrong? The nature of the infection often says something about its cause. If – as the photo shows –infection is very patchy, this will rarely occur on farms that fi ll the rooms with phase III compost. This pattern is typical of a problem caused in phase I when the compost was not mixed again after the infection had developed. In this case, you should look for the cause in a problem at mixing or wetting the compost in phase I. If the rest of the compost looks quite good, the signs indicate a problem during phase I. In many cases the origin is faulty mixing equipment or a failure to properly distribute the raw materials. A thorough visual check of this part of the process can throw some light on the problem.

If all of the compost is infected, and the mushrooms surrounding the green patches are clearly weaker, the problem may have been caused by poor hygiene at inoculation. But here too, the source can also be something wrong in the recipe. With phase III compost, properly cleaning all the equipment and transportation used in the process is extremely important. Green mould infection is spread much quicker when phase III compost is mixed, loaded and fi lled.
