good phase II compost for customers. The quality of casing soil is a huge problem in Brazil and a lack of knowledge means that most growers don’t know what good casing – which is often contaminated in Brazil- is anyway. The casing soil Compobras produces for a few growers was successfully pasteurised and production improved in leaps and bounds. Another plan being considered is building a

Dutch-style demo-farm of three to 12 growing rooms. This could persuade mixed farmers to take a chance and build a mushroom farm too. The demo-facility could be used to try out filling in bulk, a system which could later be rolled out to farms in the vicinity, as well as offering to empty the rooms for these farms. As well as supplying raw materials for mush- room growing, Compobras also provides training and consultancy services using Clayton Helmes. Many growers are newcomers to the sector and lack knowledge and good growing rooms. Many small farms have no insulation, or only badly-insulated rooms, and little or no climate control, so in winter the temperature plummets in the rooms, while in summer it skyrockets. There is also little measurement or control of relative humidity and CO2 levels. The growers are highly dependent on the outside climate, and their lack of expertise also means a high incidence of trichoderma , bubble and bacterial blotch. Another factor is that farms and shelving systems all differ so widely that bulk filling is impossible. An important hurdle that has to be taken is improving the professional level of cultivation to create more consistent quality and production. Compobras evidently wants to play a leading role in this respect.

Opportunities There is a great future ahead for mushroom growing in Brazil. Consumption of fresh mushrooms is still low, but Brazilian consumers are showing interest in good quality mushrooms, with a long shelf life. In the large supermarkets in Brazil there is an amazing range of vegetables and exotic fruit on display, but often no fresh mushrooms to be seen.

Compobras is clearly forging ahead in the right direction, interestingly enough using a formula that resembles that taken successfully by the Dutch company CNC in the 1950s. Let’s hope the Brazilians don’t make the same mistakes.
