Dutch colony in South America (see also MB39). Here he built up a mixed farm. Making compost actually started as a kind of hobby when a grower asked whether Haasjes could make some for his mushrooms. He started to build, and he is still building. Along the way, Compobras has evolved into the nation’s largest compost producer. And the compost it makes has helped many Brazilian mushroom growers carve out a healthier financial position.
Do it yourself
There is no straw market in Brazil, so supplies, pressing and storage all have to be arranged by the company, which increase the overall costs. The chicken manure is of very poor quality. Due to the short production cycles of poultry, the chicken houses are only cleared out after a number of cycles, meaning the manure has not had time to become highly concentrated. In Castrolanda there are six bunkers for phase I each with a capacity of 150 tons and four tunnels each with a capacity of 110 tons. They all have spigot flooring and were all built by the company.
