NEWS Sylvan Workshop in Wroclaw
Sylvan held a successful In- ternational Exotic Mushroom Workshop on the 10th and 11th April. The objective was to create a platform for exchange of information and discussion within the complex world of exotic substrate and mushroom producers.

It was with great sadness and profound regret, that we lear- ned of the passing of Jan Ver- heijen on Friday 15th February 2013, aged 67, after a short but severe illness.
Jan was predeceased by his wife Annie Verheijen Jacobs and is survived by his child- ren Marieke and Mark and four grandchildren. Jan had a very successful career in the mushroom industry and his family and friends can be very
proud of the lasting legacy and contribution he made. He was an encyclopedia of knowledge with great recall of the history, development and challenges of our industry. Jan worked 22 years for Sylvan as a technical adviser after more than 17 years at the Dutch Mushroom School. Following his retirement he remained involved as a part- time consultant. Outside of work Jan was very involved in his local community. He was chairman of the Youth
Center “Jeugdcentrum de Vlies” and co-organiser of the walking festival “Wandeldrie- daagse”. In 1999 in recognition of his commitment and work for the youth of Horst he received an award, something which he was very proud of. According to Sylvan, ‘Jan was the right man, always in the right place at the right moment. A wonderfully patient mentor and treasured member of our global team’. We extend our deepest sympa- thies to his family and friends.
Farm visits The second day involved farm visits. In the morning, the pack house and Pleurotus farm of Kaczmarek was visited. Here the group experienced the suc- cessful cropping of Rucciesky substrate spawned with Sylvan Pleurotus strains. The second visit was to a shiitake substrate farm run by Drzazdzynski and his wife. The substrate is based on oak sawdust and some shredded corn, sterilized by autoclave and spawned with
Sylvan 4312 and 4320. In the afternoon the specialty vegeta- ble and flower seed company Legutko was visited. In the eve- ning the group was invited for dinner by the town of Jutrosin. All participants experienced an interesting exchange of infor- mation realizing the challenges of the exotic industry, and ac- quired new contacts. Due to the positive feedback Sylvan will organize further workshops in the future. Sylvan would like to thank all participants for their contribution, the Polish growers and the local government for their warm welcome. Sylvan produces and distribu- tes; Pleurotus ostreatus strains HK35, Kryos, Fotios, Etna and sporeless Pleurotus ostreatus Spoppo; shiitake strains 4312 and 4080; Pholiota aegerita 4022 and Lepista nuda 4102. Sylvan is present at the Dutch Mushroom Days, visit stand nr. 71.
