CONTENTS The marketplace
The first time I visited the Mushroom Days was in 2002. The show had relocated to Den Bosch and we had just started the Paddestoelen publication. Since then I have visited many mushroom-related trade events in Europe and beyond, but not one is as impressive as this one. Just take the equipment on display for starters, it’

make the mouths of unsuspecting visitors water. The first time I knew no one, now I know practically everyone. And everybody is present. Over the years, the event has stayed strikingly true to itself. The venue (Brabanthallen), the admission (free), the organisation, the format; the Mushroom Days is the Mushroom Days, pure and simple. At the kick-off meeting there are often some critical com- ments from exhibitors. And rightly so, the show depends on them. And many Dutch exhibitors, especially, are veterans of so many fairs. Anyone who has ever had to arrange a stand at a show, set it up and staff it, is aware of the amount of hard work this involves (after all ‘the day job’ doesn’t stop). So, they expect that the show organi- sers take care of all the smallest details, right down to preventing any strange smells wafting from the drains. A cause of concern this time is the frequency of the Mushroom Days in the near future. The show is scheduled for 2015 and 2017 , with the ISMS congress in Amsterdam sandwiched in between in 2016. Too much of a good Dutch thing? Time will tell.
Ultimately – and this is also a constant factor – virtually all the well-known regulars booked a stand, and the list of exhibitors welcomes a number of newcomers. In the Preview in this edition, you can get an impression of what’
s on offer.
The theme of this edition is; ‘The Mushroom Days – a Healthy Business’. Leo van Griensven will give a presen- tation on the health beneficial properties of mushrooms. At the last edition the stands were more or less divided over a large and a slightly smaller hall, which didn’t particularly please the exhibitors in the last category. This time, all the stands will be placed in one, large hall with visitors passing through a hospitality zone before actually reaching the stands. For various reasons the culinary event that took diners on a walking tour of Den Bosch and the dinner party have been retired. Many companies organise their own social events for their customers, or too few people registered, or it was too expensive or the music was too loud …. But, because it’
s still fitting to host a central event for so
many international guests, a Grand Café in the city centre has been designated the ‘Meeting Point’ on Thursday evening.

Visit the market, then pop into the pub – seems the perfect accompaniment to this event to me. So, everyone is in the starting blocks for another successful edition. As the Official Media Partner, we will of course be attending to report on all the news and promote our wares. And this time you can meet us physically in stand 2 and - if all goes according to plan - in the virtual marketplace, the App Store*. I look forward to greeting you there!
