Ada Man Surrenders After Fraudulently Selling Cattle on Internet

A

Bart Perrier TSCRA Special Ranger

N ADA, OKLA. MAN SURREN- dered to authorities at

the Pontotoc County jail Aug. 25, on charges stemming from an investigation of the sale of cattle over the internet. The suspect was charged with

obtaining merchandise or money by false pretenses. Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association

(TSCRA) Special Ranger Bart Perrier jointly led the in- vestigation with Oklahoma Department of Agriculture Special Agent Ricky Rushing. According to Perrier, the suspect, Shane Mark Lynch,

35, doing business as Lynch Cattle Company, advertised cattle for sale on an online cattle-marketing website. In June 2016, a Texas man contacted Lynch and pur- chased 40 head of crossbred cow-calf pairs for the sum of $80,000 from Lynch Cattle Company. The funds were wired to Lynch, who agreed to

deliver the cattle to Texas. After several days of not hearing from Lynch, the Texas man realized the cattle were not going to be delivered as promised.

Lynch Cattle Company had been selling cattle for

several years via the online cattle-marketing site. The investigation revealed that in this case, Lynch did not actually own or possess the cattle advertised and sold to the victim. Lynch admitted that he advertised the cattle and sold

them before he actually owned the cattle in question. He also admitted that he received the funds from the victim but, due to his fi nancial situation, he could not pay back the funds or purchase cattle similar to those advertised in order to make delivery to the victim as agreed. Lynch was charged with 1 count of obtaining mer-

chandise or money by false pretenses and was released from the Pontotoc County Jail on a $10,000 bond. “This case is a good example of agencies working

together to charge and arrest a person for taking ad- vantage of ranchers via the internet,” said Perrier. “I’m pleased that we were able to stop this suspect from fraudulently taking funds from multiple victims who just wanted to purchase cattle in good faith.” TSCRA would like to thank Special Agent Rushing for his assistance in this investigation.

Sulphur Bluff Man Arrested for Cattle Theft A

Toney Hurley TSCRA Special Ranger

SULPHUR BLUFF MAN WAS AR- rested in Hopkins County

on Aug. 30 and charged with theft of livestock after failing to return 125 to 160 head of cattle that he was grazing on his pasture back to the owner in West Texas. TSCRA Special Ranger

Toney Hurley and Hopkins County investigators jointly conducted this investigation. According to Hurley, the suspect, Lindy Wayne

Shipley, 48, provided grazing land in northeast Texas to a West Texas rancher for 2 years. The suspect pro- vided the grazing for approximately 250 head of cattle at $20 per head each month. When the owner of the cattle sent trucks to the grazing land between Sul- phur Bluff and Saltillo to return them to West Texas,

52 The Cattleman November 2016

Shipley was more than 100 head of cattle short of the original count. Hurley said authorities are unsure of the location of the missing cattle and the investiga- tion continues. Shipley was arrested by Hurley at the Hopkins

County Jail for theft of livestock over $150,000 and less than $300,000. His bond was set at $250,000 on the felony charge. “It is common for ranchers located in West Texas to

send cattle to northeast Texas for grazing due to lack of rain and grass,” says Hurley. “In this case, the suspect was not able to produce the entire number of cattle he was being paid to graze and oversee on his pasture. Additionally, the suspect didn’t have a good explanation regarding the location of the missing cattle.” TSCRA would like to thank the Hopkins County

investigations division for their work throughout this investigation.
