“Whether you are a 5-head or 500-head producer,

there are niche markets out there that will allow you to maximize your return. That $50 or $100 per head becomes signifi cant at the end of the year.” He says he frequently hears cattlemen complain

that, for example, they just didn’t get paid for the VAC 45 program and they’re wondering why they bothered. “I say, ‘Well, where are you marketing those cattle?’

You have to develop a reputation that when they see your name coming through or the brand on your cattle, buyers say, ‘Oh, I bought those last year and they did an exceptionally good job. I want those again.’”

6. Understand that it may be harder to get fi nancing — but it is out there. Across the board, agriculture has had a hard time

the last few years. While 2016 was the fi rst full, hard year for cattlemen as of late, for farmers it’s been three- to fi ve- years since they have had a good one. Combine that with increased federal regulations and some banks are more reluctant to lend to agricultural producers right now. But Baize says it’s important not to blame the bank or its personnel. “There are a lot more hoops we have to jump through

today, on the lending side, than there have been over the last fi ve years,” Baize says. Though it may be harder to fi nd, fi nancing is pos-

sible. He says he’s gained new customers because of his willingness to work with ranchers, and knows there are other banks out there ready to take on the challenge, too. And tough times do come with a silver lining: Less

interest paid. “Two and 3 years ago, we had to increase our cus-

tomers’ operating lines because instead of a calf costing $500, it went to $800, $1,200, or $1,300. That meant they were paying more interest on the same basic op- eration. Now that calves are back down at $500, we can decrease those operating lines because they don’t have as much risk as they did.” ❚
