the number of cows exposed to the bull for the breeding season of the calf crop will determine this value.
• Pounds weaned per exposed female — add the weaning weights of the live calves and divide this value by the exposed cow inventory. The result is the pounds weaned per exposed cow value for the cow herd.
• Pounds weaned per acre utilized for the enterprise. The exposed cow inventory must be established at
the time the bull is turned out. Although producers may claim to have trouble determining this number, at some point during the year, the cow herd will be processed. If the cows are recorded at that time, then a simple adjustment for purchased and sold cows will be a good working number. Once the herd inventory is determined, a few quick calculations will bring the desired information. Finally, the “Pounds weaned per acre utilized”
also uses the total pounds of calf weaned. This value is divided by the total acres used to support the cow herd. This value is a measure of the feed resource pro- ductivity of the entire farm or ranch and its ability to support the cow herd.
Research has determined that this measure is also
closely linked to the profi tability of the cow herd. The value of one more live calf in the herd outweighs adding one pound of weaning weight or reducing the number of acres need to maintain the cow herd. ❚
