WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My first job was as a Sales Office

Junior in the brick department at Ashton Vernon Building Merchants in Macclesfield, when I was 16.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE TILING INDUSTRY?

I worked in the brick industry for many years and when I set up on my own, I began to introduce other building-related materials including tiles. Now we also work with retail bathrooms, which allows us to offer customers the complete package. However, tiles remain the biggest area for us in terms of sales and we have a lot of repeat custom too, which is a good sign.

WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY, DO YOU MOST

ADMIRE? Sir Alex Ferguson – I am an avid Manchester United fan and have always admired Sir Alex’s leadership skills and dedication to the game when he was the manager.

IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT, WHAT CAR

WOULD YOU BUY? Definitely a Jaguar F-Type, it is such a slick car and a real head turner when you see one on the road.

IF YOU COULD INVENT ONE PRODUCT TO MAKE YOUR JOB EASIER, WHAT

WOULD IT BE? Something that could package and deliver products to customers with ease; we are often faced with last minute orders that are urgently needed, and so having an invention that could prepare and arrange them for delivery would be a life changer. It would save everyone in the industry a lot of time and effort.

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE

GROWING UP? A footballer. When I was young boy I played it non-stop at every opportunity and even went for trials at Bury when I was 15, but unfortunately my dream never came true.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND?

I am a keen photographer and

when I get behind the camera, I automatically feel at ease within any environment. I particularly enjoy taking photographs of landscapes and a couple of years ago, The Hallé Orchestra used my image of Jodrell Bank for their promotional posters for their outdoor concert ‘Under the Stars’ which I’m very proud of.

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY WITH ANY

THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE WHO WOULD THEY BE

AND WHY? I’d definitely invite Sir Alex Ferguson because he’s the absolute master of his game. Will Ferrell as he is hilarious and would keep us all entertained, and Charlie Chaplin because he was brilliant when silent and so I’d like to see what he has to say.

9

IF YOU COULD VISIT ANY PLACE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO

AND WHY? I would love to visit Cambodia, as I have seen lots of photography from various areas of the country and I would love to go and capture these shots myself.

PATRICK CONNELLY, UK DIRECTOR OF SALONI

UK LTD. ASKED: WHAT ASPECT OF THE UK, TILE INDUSTRY WOULD YOU CHANGE FOR

THE BETTER? I would like products that are developed in the UK to be comparable with products that are made in places such as Spain and Italy. Sometimes British tiles often lack quality and I think that is why a lot of retailers opt for ones that are produced overseas.
