ASBESTOS & HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES

BIFFA LAUNCHES NATIONAL ASBESTOS DISPOSAL NETWORK

National waste management services provider, Biffa, tell us more about their recently launched asbestos disposal service; Biffa Asbestos.

Biffa Asbestos will benefit from a national disposal network that includes 12 dedicated logistics hubs throughout the UK, supported by a team of more than 85 specially trained drivers and a fleet of 200 exchange vehicles.

Asbestos remains a common problem across UK commercial properties and employers who do not adequately dispose of any asbestos in their buildings, and by doing so fail to protect their employees. These individuals may be liable for asbestos claim pay-outs running into the thousands.

Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR) 2012, any owner or occupier of non-domestic premises with maintenance and repair responsibilities has a duty to assess and manage the risks from the presence of asbestos.

Where asbestos is present, any work on it must be carried out by a licensed contractor in the majority of cases. This includes most asbestos removal, all work with sprayed asbestos coatings and asbestos lagging, and most work with asbestos insulation and asbestos insulating board (AIB).

Any asbestos product or material that is ready for disposal, including contaminated building materials, tools, personal protective equipment and damp rags used for cleaning, is defined as asbestos waste and subject to strict labelling and transportation controls under CAR 2012.

Paul Casey, Regional General Manager for Biffa’s Industrial and Commercial Division, commented: “Asbestos disposal requires specialist expertise to ensure its safe handling, labelling and transportation. We

are pleased that we can now offer this fully compliant service and licensed network of disposal points to customers seeking to remove it from their premises safely.

“Our dedicated teams are fully trained with access to hundreds of regionally located containers.”

In addition to offering a fully compliant service, customers can also benefit from Biffa’s unique CustomerZone facility, which provides an online portal through which they can order, track and manage the disposal of asbestos, ensuring the process is as straightforward as possible.

Paul adds: “Our CustomerZone provides easy access to orders, invoices and compliance documentation 24 hours a day and allows multiple users to have visibility of this information to keep all areas of the business up to date.

“This unique feature is a convenient way to track progress and report issues, helping customers to navigate asbestos compliance effectively.”
