HEALTH & SAFETY EVENT 2016

THREE DAYS TO SAVE A LIFE

The 2016 Health and Safety Event is set to return for its third year between 22nd and 24th March. We take a sneak peak at this year’s offerings.

The vastly expanded Health & Safety Event 2016 is set to provide visitors to Birmingham NEC with a wealth of educational content, interactive forums and product manufacturers and service providers.

Free education is one of the event’s major draws, with the British Safety Council (BSC) and the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) crafting this year’s programme.

One session that is bound to pull in the crowds is the presentation from Rory Underwood, the ex-England rugby international and ex-RAF pilot who will use his experience of flight safety to illustrate the importance of behavioural safety. Rory will be available to meet afterwards on the Alcumus stand.

The programme features many noted and respected presenters speaking about a range of cutting edge topics, including legislation and technology.

With the new sentencing guidelines coming into force in February, Chris Green from Weightmans LLP offers a timely presentation on the latest legislative updates. Additionally Mike Gillespie, founder of Advent IM and independent holistic security consultancy, considers information security, business continuity, information governance and physical security and training.

Brand new for 2016 is ‘Lions’ Lair’; the first of several interactive programmes running over the three days. Based loosely on a popular TV series, the ‘Lions’ Lair’ is designed to encourage innovation but also to allow visitors to witness innovative products, services and concepts being presented simply and quickly by experts, who are quizzed by a panel of industry ‘thought leaders’.

The winner will be announced on the last day of the show.

Sponsored by 3M, the Safety Dialogue Theatre returns with the number of debates increased to four 30 minute sessions per day. The format sees a round table discussion involving a live panel during which experts discuss the latest issues and open up the floor to questions from the audience. Hearing conservation; RPE/fit testing; prevention culture and training competence are key topics on the agenda.

Also back, by popular demand, is the Safer Logistics Theatre. Sponsored by Toyota and A-Safe, the theatre will host seminars by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, who will tackle the issue of transport and vulnerable road users. The United Kingdom Warehousing Association will also present on achieving best practice in warehouse safety, while the Food Storage and Distribution Federation will focus on safety issues for the cold chain.

While the full programme is still being finalised RTITB will tackle the issue of HGV driver behaviour and risk taking and the Fork Lift Truck Association will focus on forklift truck-related issues.

The Health & Safety Event invites well recognised trade bodies, manufacturers and distributors, training providers and consultants in the health and safety sector to give visitors access to new information and expert comment. The show’s co-location alongside the Industrial Maintenance themed event ‘Maintec’ and the Facilities Management event allows those from a wide range of industry types and sectors to access targeted information in one visit.

“It may be that the vital piece of information that helps one of our visitors to save a life comes from attending a

seminar or from a fellow visitor during a Safety Dialogue session,” explains Event Director Tim Else, on the ‘3 days to save a life’ theme.

“It might be that they see a new piece of technology highlighted as part of Lions’ Lair or being demonstrated on a stand. We feel by offering our visitors a cross-section of activities to attend, experts to talk to and equipment to test, feel and handle that we are doing everything we can to continually improve the health and safety knowledge and performance of businesses within the UK.”
