SHOW REVIEW

HEALTH & SAFETY NORTH 2014

On 8th and 9th October, the who’s who of the health and safety industry assembled in the (not so) sunny town of Bolton for this year’s Health & Safety North. It was the eighth instalment of the regional industry event — and it was bigger than ever.

Located at Bolton Arena and organised by Western Business Exhibitions, this year’s Health & Safety North was the largest exhibition the team has been able to offer in the town. The show boasted over 100 exhibitors alongside three educational seminar theatres.

The largest of the three conference spaces was home to the show’s longstanding educational partner, the British Safety Council (BSC). A whole host of leading industry experts graced the stage at the BSC’s theatre including HSE’s Ian Travers and Professor David Fishwick from the Health & Safety Laboratory. Kevin Bridges, a partner at Pinsent Masons LLP, attracted a large and engaged audience for his look back at landmark health and safety judgements in the courts.

Another stand out showcase organised by the BSC came from health and safety tag team Shaun Curry and Harry Gallagher from Macnaughton McGregor. The pair shook off the shackles of conventional lectures and delivered an interactive drama based workshop on developing safety culture in the workplace.

Event partners 3M, Arco, DuPont and NQA banded together to deliver a series of specialist seminars in the second theatre, while at the Safety Dialogue space, visitors were invited to join the discussion. Here, today’s hot topics in health and safety were debated, including noise induced hearing loss and improving PPE compliance.

In what was a successful bid to encourage visitors to strike up conversation with stand holders, the

organisers offered a show loyalty card. Each visit to a stand earned a tick in the box towards a chance to win prizes.

And the opportunities to go home a winner didn’t end there. Title sponsor of Health & Safety North, 3M, adorned a wall with over £2,500 worth of PPE ready to be given away to one lucky visitor to its flagship stand.

Reflecting on another successful year in Bolton, Tim Else, Event Director, commented: “The Health & Safety North event keeps on growing and this year’s event attracted more than 2000 visitors and also more exhibitors than ever. Also, 40% of the companies, trade bodies and training providers that exhibited were completely new to the event giving the repeat visitors access to new information.

“Additionally this year, the event featured a revised and improved layout meaning that the conference and the exhibition were all on the same floor which benefited everybody. The feedback that we have received from both visitors and exhibitors indicates that the Health & Safety series provides the right mix of educational content and product and service providers.”

If you missed this year’s event in Bolton, never fear! Tim Else and his team have a packed programme planned for 2015, kicking off with The Health & Safety Event at the NEC in Birmingham on 24th to 26th March.
