10 QUESTIONS WITH... MICHAEL PAGE

Each month we ask an industry professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Michael Page, joint Managing Director of leading workplace consultant, Saracen Interiors

Q5

Q1 Q2

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

A paper-round.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES

MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?

Our facilities management division, Saracen Facilities, evolved from the success of our fit out operation. We’ve built strong relationships and enjoy a high level of repeat business. Existing clients began asking if we could take care of their facilities. To them, it made sense that the guys who sourced and fitted their facilities should be the same guys managing and maintaining them – and it works. We have the knowledge and the expertise and we’ve built a good level of trust. Ultimately, it’s all about relationships.

Q3 Q4

WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY, DO YOU

MOST ADMIRE?

Richard Branson, for his ability to recognise opportunity in people and in business.

IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT, WHAT CAR

WOULD YOU BUY?

The new Aston Martin One-77. A stunning design combined with the latest technology.

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE FACILITIES

MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?

The most critical ingredient for success in the Facilities Management industry is true service. A recognized service structure, running across all client sectors, would go a long way to regulating service levels – not to mention sorting the wheat from the chaff in the industry. This would have to be applicable to all FM businesses as there needs to be more attention paid to the crucial input of the small facilities companies as well as the multi-national players who populate the industry.

Q6

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE

GROWING UP?

I think at some point I might have wanted to be a policeman when I was really little but my over-riding aim was always to be happy. I’m a great believer in going after what makes you happy in life and if you’re going to be good at your job and build a real career to be proud of, then you absolutely have to be happy in your chosen field.

Q7 Q8

WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND?

Spend time with my beautiful family. Having kids changes everything. They pretty much dictate my free time – not that I’m complaining. I’m a lucky man.

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY WITH

ANY THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE, WITH A FOURTH COOKING AND A FIFTH PROVIDING THE MUSIC, WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? Henry VIII, Winston Churchill,

the Queen, Nelson Mandela and Whitney Houston. I wouldn’t dream of asking a guest to cook - although I’d hope that Whitney would belt out a couple of tunes. I’d want to hear all about what drives them in order to get a better understanding of each one’s determination. I’d also want to know if their lives had turned out as they imagined.

Q9

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE OF THE

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?

Technology will drive the future direction of Facilities Management, particularly in the hard services sector. The development of advanced building management systems, together with increased hardware reliability, will lead to a service which is much less site-specific and site- based. I also believe that there will be a new domestic FM industry that will flourish as our homes become more technologically advanced. This domestic side will adopt many of the building management systems and processes currently seen in the commercial arena.

Q10

TOD HARRISON, MANAGING DIRECTOR

- FM, KEYSOURCE ASKED: WHAT WOULD YOUR DREAM HOLIDAY DESTINATION BE AND WHY?

That’s hard to call but I think it would have to be one of the remote Islands in the Philippines. I visited the Philippines shortly after leaving university and its beauty is outstanding – although it’s difficult to witness the extreme poverty that exists in the midst of this beauty.
