At the CIEH, we believe that training is an important step for better sustainable practices. In-fact, sustainability and training are fundamentally linked as training provides an effective education framework for facility management practitioners, as well as enabling staff and management to be prepared to implement the correct environmental management systems.
A WORTHWHILE
INVESTMENT A criticism that is often levelled at training is that it’s expensive and time-consuming. We’re not blind to the fact that there is cost involved and a certain amount of administrative resources are spent on ensuring your staff partake in training. Nonetheless, training is fundamentally not only good for health and wellbeing but it is also good for business.
Training and qualifying staff provides for effective retention and improved performance as staff will feel like they are valued because they are being invested in. Additionally, trained staff will ensure robust compliance to prevailing regulations, which means your business is less likely to fall foul of the regulatory inspector.
Furthermore, while cutting a few corners and reducing your training budget might save you money and time in the short-term, if you are unfortunately caught up in an incident that could have been avoided with the right training, this could adversely impact on your customers and your reputation for a considerable amount of time.
It is simply not true that training is about ‘gold-plating’ your services. As an industry, we need to start changing how we think about training in that it ensures good standards and common sense practices, both vital to any business.
