BECOME A ZERO WASTE HERO


Fundamentally any waste, recycling or resource management service can only be as good as the strategy that underpins it. Harvey Laud, Chief Executive of environmental consultancy and contract management partner, Helistrat, gives


some helpful pointers to businesses setting out to develop a waste and recycling service that is capable of delivering real change.


SET YOUR STRATEGY This seems like an obvious point, however, all too often


businesses are immediately drawn into discussions around container types and collection frequency. We need to get away from focusing on services and implementation and start off by thinking about what we want to achieve.


If you imagine the development of a new resource management system as a pyramid, most people would have implementation across the base, with a narrow band for planning above it and finally strategy at the very tip.

This approach leads us to think about: • How do we segregate the different types of material? • What type of bins do we need? • Who will be the cheapest people to collect it?


If we balance out this pyramid and start with developing our strategy, this frees us up to think about what can really be achieved. In this instance, we can start to think about some meaningful and challenging objectives that will enable us to deliver real change. These might include:
