Building A Future For Elderly Care
Paul Gouland, Marketing Director at Clugston Construction, explores one care home project which is currently helping to meet the increasing demand for care home stock.
Across the UK, the demand for elderly care has increased dramatically with the number of people aged over 80 set to double in the next 25 years, according to the Healthcare Capital Markets 2016 report. Despite this, more than 75% of existing care home stock is in need of upgrading whilst the demand for new accommodation outstrips the supply, with just 6,000 new care beds being supplied each year.
Nestled in the charming historic market town of Farnham, close to the Surrey and Hampshire border, is Farnham Care Home, a state-of- the-art healthcare facility being developed by Porthaven Care Homes.
The scheme, which is being built by Clugston Construction, in collaboration with project managers Chessman Consulting and a pioneering design team, is currently around two thirds of the way complete and, when the new facility opens in the summer of 2017, it will provide high-quality care to the elderly population of the surrounding areas.
Innovative in its design, the 64-bedroom Farnham Care Home building is set over two-storeys, with a spacious 3,258m2
en-suite private bathrooms, assisted bathrooms, communal lounges, private dining rooms and a host of

facilities which extends beyond just providing a comfortable environment. These include a unique and award- winning leisure and wellness offering with the inclusion of activity areas including a cinema, café, hair salon, and high quality external spaces.
A high level of finishes have been specified with fully-tiled en-suite wet rooms using Porcelanosa tiles, luxury Tektura wallpaper, walnut joinery and Karndean floor finishes used throughout to maximise the luxuriousness of the building. The internal furnishings and fittings have been chosen to continue the theme, with occupants being offered a wide choice of colour schemes, as well as fitted oak or walnut furniture and flat screen TVs, with full internet access.
With all facilities tailored to ensure high standards of residential nursing and dementia care, the new care home incorporates levels of nursing and care technology needed to support people with differing needs, whilst maintaining a respectful and empathetic environment.

Building on countless construction projects completed over its 80- year history, Clugston was able to work with the team from a very early stage. This proved especially invaluable right at the start of the project when difficult ground
conditions were discovered. Drawing on their ground remediation experience, Clugston were able to develop an effective solution and keep delays to a minimum.
This long association with healthcare projects was also pivotal to helping meet the technical requirements of Porthaven Care Homes. Over the years, this care home provider has refined its care home specification to make sure all of its specialist care facilities are built to consistently high standards and provide a safe and welcoming environment across its entire portfolio.
In order to achieve the excellent standards that Porthaven demands for its residents, and meet the very specific design features associated with this particular field, Clugston established a close relationship with the client from the outset and ensured effective communication was maintained throughout the scheme.
Part of the Clugston Group, Clugston Construction has extensive experience in the health and care sector. Over its 80-year history, the company’s healthcare construction team have delivered a number of high-quality health and care projects for high-profile national and international customers.
