TECHNOLOGY (INCLUDING MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS)
care. GrandCare, from ATEL, is one of those products. Its fully customisable features - sensors, communication tools, scheduling, care reporting and healthcare devices – deliver a holistic view of the day-to-day wellbeing and activities of the individual. Activity, or lack of it, is monitored and analysed against a set of individually tailored ‘rules’, with a pre-defined list of responses. All these features are continuously working, offering a solution for when carers and family members can’t be there in person.
SIMPLE AND EASY GrandCare’s social functions – secure video calling, photograph album and emails – ensure that individuals feel less lonely as they have the ability to keep in closer communication with family and friends. Its large touch screen interface makes using the device simple and easy, so individuals with varying levels of needs are capable of using the technology.
VITAL MONITORING Other technology on offer is Vitalerter, which has been designed for residential homes and supported living. This technology sits on the bed frame and continuously monitors an individual’s vital signs, monitoring heart-rate, respiration rate and body motion, along with oxygen levels and body temperate to help assist care organisations manage the health of people within their care.
Continuing to drive forward on being proactive, Vitalerter can provide warnings of irregular breathing, heart rate incidents, epilepsy seizures and sleeping disorders and, in some cases, can alert carers to potential health problems eight hours before they are at the highest risk.
REAL-TIME VIEW Each device can be managed through a central monitoring dashboard, providing carers with access to real- time, actionable information from anywhere. Whether in a central monitoring room, where alerts can signal something isn’t quite right, to an on-the-go tablet for bedside analysis with the most up to date vital signs, the monitoring dashboard enables a real-time view of resident’s current medical state.
NO-FUSS DRAINAGE Assistive technology isn’t just electronic, there are other clever devices out there that can make a huge difference to individuals. U-drain is a prime example of this. An innovative drainage system, it completely reduces the need for night drainage bags and for two-hour check-ins by a carer to remove and empty fluid. The vast majority of U-drain sits behind the walls of the property, with the system plugged in to the fowl waste drainage. With just a socket the size of a plug on show, carers or individuals can attach their urostomy tube so that fluid can easily drain away with minimal fuss.
HB VILLAGES To get the best out of the assistive technology we offer, we’ve worked closely with HB Villages which develops and builds specialist supported housing. In doing so, we’ve been able to ensure the infrastructure of the building - cabling, layout and physical structure – can support assistive technology easily and without the need for expensive retrofits down the line.
can now offer, it opens up opportunities
that were previously unavailable to the care industry.”
Each HB Villages development is built to enable a layered approach to the way each apartment can adapt depending on the service user. Following an assessment by ourselves, and working closely with care providers and social workers, we can easily add in, or take away different pieces of technology.
We are always looking at ways we can push technology forward, and we see further innovation lying in GrandCare working alongside our home halo system; a building management system designed for use within the care sector. The halo system will be fitted as standard within HB Villages’ developments as well as being available to other developers, housing associations and retirement living providers, and will offer local authorities the opportunity to make developments fully sustainable, from minimal running costs (electricity, water and gas) through to safeguarding of residents. This, alongside GrandCare, offers local authorities the opportunity to make cost efficiencies across the board, through reduction in care hours and running costs.
