MEDICATION DEALING WITH
DYSPHAGIA Dysphagia, or difficulty in swallowing, is a serious issue. Those aged 50 to 80, especially those with congenital or degenerative neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s Disease and stroke sufferers are more at risk.
When complications arise, the swallowing process can be traumatic, often leading to choking and shortness of breath. In light of this taking daily medication can be challenging.
To ease the situation, medicines are often crushed or capsules opened and, in some cases, mixed with food or drink to aid the swallowing process. This, unfortunately, can lead to complications including medication overdoses.
Sian Jones, Registered Manager at the Three Roses Home, commented about her struggles:
“One of the Three Roses Home residents has dementia and has swallowing difficulties. As a result, she had been spitting out her medication. I had been to the GP twice to ask for her medication to be provided in liquid form only to be told that it was too expensive; however the doctor gave us permission to crush her medication.”
These struggles are common in care homes; however there is now a swallowing gel from the Netherlands revolutionising dysphagia-related issues.
Gloup® is a universal jelly intended to make solid medicines easier to swallow. Gloup® can be used by anyone who struggles to swallow solid medicines — it does not contain gluten or allergens, and is sugar-free.
After using the product, Sian Jones said:
“As you can imagine taking five tablets every morning as a crushed powder tasted horrible and the resident would spit it out. We had
started to mix it with jam to make it more palatable but she was having none of it and we were concerned that she would be having five teaspoons of sugar every day.”
“Gloup® is a fantastic product! It’s great as we keep the tablets whole and there is no sugar in it so it’s a win win situation, the resident now receives her medication properly and is happier too.”
Gloup® allows medication to perform as intended and reduces a staff member’s exposure to airborne particles of the medicines released through the crushing process.
By helping to reduce the stress and anxiety associated with dysphagia, coupled with the knowledge that prescribed medications are being taken as intended, Gloup® is having a huge impact on the quality of life for both resident and care staff.
