10 QUESTIONS WITH... STEPHEN WHITTALL

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Stephen Whittall, Group Operations Manager, at Airdri Limited.

and more recognition for the innovation and expertise that goes on in it. For example, all Airdri’s hand dryers are designed and engineered in Britain, but they’re sold all over the world. That’s the sort of success story we need to shout about and it’s just one out of many successes in the industry.

Q6 Q1

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? I was a materials research

engineer at Imperial Metals developing aerospace and semiconductor materials for the space and defence industry.

Q2

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I’ve been working in engineering and manufacturing for over 30 years, but my move to hand dryer manufacturer Airdri, just over a year ago brought me into the cleaning sector for the first time. I now manage the quality assurance function, ensuring that our engineering, manufacturing and service continues to exceed our customers’ expectations.

Q3 Q4 Q5

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR

PERSONALITY? Curiosity, optimism and commitment.

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD,

WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY? North Korea (told you I was curious!).

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING

INDUSTRY? The cleaning industry is all too often dismissed as menial work carried out by anonymous figures in the background. I’d like to see more value being placed on this essential industry

70 | Tomorrow’s Cleaning November 2015 Q7

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW,

WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE THEM? If you are not sure about something don’t be afraid to ask. However busy people might seem, they would always rather answer a question in advance than have to solve a problem later down the line.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD

YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE? I don’t even need to think about it. My first step would be to see that my family and friends would never have to concern themselves with financial issues. Money can’t buy you happiness, but it can take away some of the worries of modern life.

Q8 Q9

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE

ANY THREE PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? Stephen Fry, Albert Einstein and my Dad. Stephen Fry for his wit, Albert Einstein for his colossal intelligence and my dad because I miss him.

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE

CLEANING INDUSTRY? The cleaning industry is always innovating with new products and methods being introduced regularly. I don’t think that’s going to change any time soon. The introduction of greater automation and robotics is something that fascinates me as an

engineer and is something I think we’ll see more and more of.

IF YOU COULD ASK DAVID CAMERON TO MAKE ONE

CHANGE IN THE LAWS OF THE COUNTRY WHAT WOULD IT BE? At Airdri we work very hard to ensure our products are inclusive and can be used by people of all ages and abilities. There are many equality laws already in place, but anything that can be done to make life more inclusive would be welcome.
