TEN YEARS STRONG

As celebrations kick off for their ten-year anniversary, we spoke to Mark Styles, Managing Director of Thomann-Hanry UK, to find out a bit more about their company, what they do, and how they’ve established themselves as leading building exterior cleaners.

Remember, remember the fifth of November. Not just for the annual celebrations of Bonfire Night, and all the fireworks, sparklers and toffee apples that invariably go along with this, but also as the date that Thomann-Hanry UK marks ten years of service. Using their revolutionary ‘facade gommage’ method of building exterior cleaning, the company has worked on many a prestigious building, including the Ritz Hotel and Bank of England in London, and firmly established itself as one of the leading building restoration companies in the country.

Before they headed out to Michelin- starred restaurant Galvin at Windows at Hilton Park Lane to celebrate the milestone anniversary with fine dining and a sublime view of the capital city’s plentiful fireworks displays, we had

a chat with Mark Styles, Managing Director of the UK division, to hear more about the company, and how they’ve made it to ten years.

Tomorrow’s Cleaning (TC): So Mark, tell us a bit about yourself. How did you get involved with Thomann-Hanry?

Mark Styles (MS): I worked for a property auction house when I left school – I took a gap year which ended up being permanent, and through working at the auction house and buying and selling property I got into construction. One day just through a chance meeting I met someone who, when I said I worked in construction, said they had an amazing system in Paris for cleaning buildings. I met with the Thomann- Hanry family, who own the patents and the system, in Paris, and agreed to

bring the company to England – and that was actually ten years ago this month, on November 5th 2005.

TC: The facade gommage technique that Thomann-Hanry uses is very interesting and quite unique too. Can you tell us a bit more about how it works?

MS: The facade gommage technique is completely unique. In this system, we clean the building using very fine powders. These powders are much akin to mineral talc, they’re very light but sharp and they have enough mass and energy to cut through the dirt but they don’t affect the stone in any way. The clever bit is actually in the cabin, which is mounted in the arm of a hydraulic platform. In the cabin is a huge recovery unit, so as we clean the building, the cabin sucks all the powder and dust into it, much like a giant
