As preparations for the bi-annual BDMA Conference, held at the end of the month in Stratford-on- Avon, continue to build, we find out a bit more about what is in store at the year’s event from the organisation itself.


The specialist knowledge and expertise of professional cleaning practitioners can be an essential element in the restoration of properties that have been damaged by fire, flood, escapes of water, contamination or criminal activity. However, there may well be several other parties involved in the process – all with different priorities and responsibilities. Depending on the size and nature of an incident, other stakeholders might include insurers, loss adjusters, damage management practitioners, builders, emergency planners, business continuity managers and local authority or government representatives.


The BDMA Conference, which takes place every two years, offers a rare opportunity for these different stakeholders to exchange experiences and explore how they can work together more effectively.


‘Stronger Together’ is the theme for this year’s conference, recognising the progress being achieved in the management of property claims, and

the benefits devolving to the customer, as a result of increasing collaboration between wider industry sectors.


In addition to reviewing the advances that have taken place in recent years, the event will consider strategies that will provide a framework for the future and, for the wide ranging mix of delegates, there will be the chance to develop valuable cross-sector relationships.


The programme will also include workshops and seminars on practical recovery and restoration issues, case studies on the Glasgow School of Art fire and flooding on the Somerset Levels, as well as the opportunity to debate current technical issues.


Alongside the conference, a major exhibition brings together suppliers of equipment and services relevant to the cleaning, damage management and insurance industries, adding a further dimension to this high profile event.


You can choose to attend on either of the two days, or opt for the full conference package which includes the Industry Awards Dinner at the end


of the event. You may therefore find it helpful to consider some of the topics to be covered on each day:


WHAT PRACTITIONERS CAN


LEARN ON DAY ONE The emphasis on Day One will be on the practical and technical aspects of property recovery and restoration.


There will be workshops and seminars on subjects such as restoring fire and smoke damaged buildings and contents, property drying options, measuring moisture in concrete, how the properties of building materials affect cleaning and drying decisions, roles and relationships over the course of a property claim, awareness of potential fraudulent claims and forensic investigations that are carried out where fraud is suspected.


There will also be sessions on the specific knowledge and expertise associated with commercial restoration, the 2015 CDM regulations, the relevance of industry standards, the position of the industry in the wider market and, as already
