FUTURE PROSPECTS The outlook for the UK wetrooms market looks positive with good growth anticipated into the medium-longer term.
Demand should be supported by the emerging trend towards multi- generational households, the requirements under the 2014 Care Act and growth in the self-build market, among other factors. Properties with multi-generational households would need to be adapted inclusively to suit the needs of all family members. The new simplified housing standards for England will also influence demand, defining the design and supply of accessible and adaptable homes in the future.
Wetroom areas are likely to progressively replace baths, as a more practical and accessible alternative and by 2019, the market is forecast to have increased by 34% compared to 2014.
KEY TRENDS Housebuilders are increasingly adding wetrooms to newbuild private homes in order to add value and attract buyers. Baths continue to be commonly specified in the main bathroom but the smaller second bathroom or ensuite is now more likely to have a wetroom installed, both for practical and aesthetic reasons.
PRODUCT MIX Floor formers and level access trays
take the largest share of the wetroom products market with around 50% share.
Waterproof tanking kits account for around 20% of the market and typically include membrane roll, primer, reinforcing tape, jointing compound and putty.
Glass wetroom panels have 16% value share and are used in a number of installations as a focal point in the wetroom and also to zone wet and dry areas.
Drainage products have 14% share and include drains/gullies and pumps. Shower drainage pumps are particularly useful in ground floor installations where the waste pipe may be at a lower level than existing waste services.

The growth of the trend towards contemporary design has motivated consumers to create a clean and uncluttered look throughout much of their home. This has led to a demand for more
open plan arrangements, in flats and apartments, or in existing homes where improvement and redesign is undertaken.
Product developments include pre- moulded wetroom floor formers with a built-in gradient and membrane waterproof tanking systems. These are easier to install and provide greater accuracy, but these also ensure there is a minimal chance of error, saving a significant amount of installation time. Recent design developments have also meant that there are now also wetroom products available that can be used on concrete floors or on timber joists.
