MILLIKEN TAKES MILAN
Flooring from Milliken was given an exclusive edge when a special collection of its flooring was commissioned by Polish designer Mac Stopa as part of an exhibition at Milan Design Week.
As part of this year’s FuoriSalone, a major exhibition, ‘Interni Open Borders’ (11th
-23rd April 2016), took place in the
historic courtyards of the Università degli Studi di Milano.
The exhibition presented macro-objects, micro-architectures and installations created by internationally - acclaimed designers, setting out to get beyond the conventional boundaries of Architecture and Design; opening to a multidisciplinary approach of contamination.
Mac Stopa, the Polish architect, designer and fashion designer, was invited by Interni to design the press office for the event, following many years of collaboration with the magazine. Stopa interpreted the theme ‘Open Borders’ by creating a design and applying it to different elements of the interior across a diverse range of design disciplines, from glass to carpet, to a 3D printed lamp, to a building facade.
Mac Stopa said: “By Open Borders I mean opening borders between different design disciplines: architecture, industrial design, graphic design and fashion.
“Experience gained in one discipline helps to create objects in other design disciplines. We can jump from architecture, to industrial design or from industrial design to fashion. The design of the Transparency carpet tiles from Milliken illustrates how to cross the border between graphic design, industrial design and architecture.”

The Design Without Borders Interni Press Office integrates visitors in a world of three-dimensionality, colours and textures, while creating a functional, productive and inspiring work environment. The space is divided into two zones. The first zone features the reception area with a custom reception desk and colourful poufs for guest seating, both made from COMFY Noodles by NMC and designed by Mac Stopa.
In addition, there are Coral Arstyl Wall Tiles on the counter’s front panels and Wing Arstyl tiles, part of a collection by Mac Stopa for NMC, which are integrated with the wall covering of the same geometry throughout the press office.
The second zone features a separate meeting area with soft seating, tables and poufs from the new Drum Collection by Mac Stopa for Cappellini.
For flooring, the press office is furnished with Mac’s Transparency modular carpet with an organic design produced by Milliken, whose geometry is formed by three transparent layers mixed to create unusual dimensional depth.
The 3D pattern on the modular carpet is also applied on the lampshade of the 3D printed lamp, on the Mira table by Mac Stopa for Casali, as well as on the facade of the Massive Design Arena, Mac’s conceptual design of a building featured in a video presentation prepared especially for the Design Without Borders Press Office
installation. The visual impact of the entire arrangement is guaranteed.
Helen Lloyd, the designer responsible for translating Stopa’s design into carpet tiles at Milliken, explains the unique process: “The designer, Mac Stopa, sent us a detailed design as well as a simulated 3D image of the press office. The creation of Mac’s ‘Transparency’ prototype tiles was a very speedy process, with the first sample run produced only one week after receiving design approval.”
Milliken’s unique patented technology, Millitron, meant the design could be precisely printed onto the carpet tiles. Mac Stopa designed the pattern for the carpet so that it doesn’t matter which tiles were placed where so the pattern would always work and connect from one tile to the next.
And to make installation even more straightforward, TractionBack, a remarkable high-friction coating, was used so that the tiles could be quickly and easily installed in the press office with no need for adhesives.
Alison Kitchingman, Milliken Marketing and Design Director, said: “We’re very proud to have been selected for this prestigious project and to be able to showcase so many of the unique benefits of our proprietary Millitron patterning technology within such a creative and inspiring interior.”
