UNIVERSITY STUDENTS EXPLORE BIOPHILIC POP UP AT MANCHESTER BUSINESS SCHOOL
Manchester University students have been exploring a pop-up biophilic space, designed by interior architecture and biophilic design expert, Oliver Heath, during a one-day event.
Boasting an array of fresh greenery, combined with nature-inspired flooring, the multi-sensory installation encouraged the students to interact with the space, and help feel the benefits of biophilic design – a concept based on harnessing people’s innate connection to nature in order to support their health and well-being.
Commenting on the installation, Oliver Heath, who is a biophilic design ambassador for modular flooring manufacturer, Interface, said: “The central circulation space on the ground floor of University Place was transformed into a biophilic haven. We took inspiration from a forest glade for the installation, covering columns with printed tree graphics, laying biomimetic flooring tiles and incorporating pebbled shaped seating.
“A growing body of research, including Interface’s Human Spaces report, has found that incorporating natural elements into a space can have significant benefits on our health and well-being. This was really proven today, as the students immediately felt at ease in the space, creating a hub for them to sit, linger, talk and relax.”
The temporary space was created as part of a Vital Topics event hosted by the University of Manchester’s Alliance Business School, Smart Cities - Solutions for Tomorrow’s World. The series of talks explored design solutions to overcome future urban infrastructure challenges before they become a problem.

MAPEI PROUD TO
SPONSOR FITA IN 2017 Mapei is proud to be sponsoring FITA throughout 2017. The non-profit making organisation provides an important investment into the flooring industry, continually developing training courses whilst promoting up- to-date installation information and assistance to flooring professionals.
The company recognises the importance of passing on skills and best practice through training and demonstrations to the next generation of floorlayers. Mapei’s resilient product manager, John Monaghan, commented: “The courses FITA offers provide a standard for the industry, along with important technical information about how Mapei products should be used to ensure the correct installation.”
FITA representatives, Richard Catt, Mick O’Flynn and Steve Ramsden recently visited Mapei UK headquarters. The visit included a full laboratory and factory tour showcasing the strict quality control and manufacturing processes which Mapei implement to ensure that product entering the market is only of the highest quality.
Richard Catt, CEO of the Contract Flooring Association said: “We are delighted to welcome Mapei to the growing number of companies that sponsor FITA. It is extremely important that we have the support of leading brands such as Mapei and a win-win for delegates who attend FITA courses and use their products.
“Training with up-to-date, innovative products is obviously important and it is a fact that what fitters train with is what they are likely to use as they move through their careers. Perhaps as important is that the combined efforts of companies such as Mapei and training organisations such as FITA join together to add value and quality in to the supply chain”
Flooring Product Guides are also available at the FITA training centre for delegates to take away and view at their leisure.
