TAKE TO THE OPEN FLOOR

We catch up with Matt Bourne of Floorskills to shine the Spotlight on the training

provider’s open day which is taking place this May at the Solihull centre.

FloorSkills is hosting an open day on May 12th this year and

all are invited to meet the trainers and some of the supporting manufacturers. There will be demos from FloorSkills trainers and selected manufacturers. Matt Bourne tells us more of what we can expect on the day.

1.1 Why did you decide to hold the open day?

We decided to have the open day so that retailers and installers could come and meet our supporting manufacturers and also meet each other. There are many social media flooring groups where installers and retailers speak but don’t meet. This open day will give them a chance to network and meet each other in person.

2. Who do you hope will come? 2

We hope to have both new and existing patrons of FloorSkills attending. We have a commitment to carry on supporting installers and retailers after they the completed courses and this event is one way to do that.

3. 3

Is it difficult to attract new people into the flooring trade?

No it’s not difficult to attract new people. However, there is a lack of jobs available due to companies not taking on apprentices; we get phone calls daily from retailers asking if we can recommend installers. The problem is that not enough retailers are taking on apprentices to replace the installers who are retiring. We offer fully funded apprenticeships to help speed along the apprentices’ training.

twitter.com/TContractFloors SPOTLIGHT ON FLOORSKILLS | 15 9 7. What’s new for FloorSkills this year?

We have plenty of new courses we will be launching this year along with a new website which is now being built. This will increase our support and help to the installers and retailers who have taken courses with FloorSkills in the past.

8 8. What new courses have you added?

We have added some more advanced courses and some new courses including cladding systems. We have plenty more coming soon.

9. Can apprentices get funding to complete the courses?

Yes we run fully funded apprenticeships for 16-19 year olds and part funded for 19+. The apprenticeships run over an 18-month-period and the apprentice gains an NVQ qualification at the end. We have a very fast record of getting the apprentices trained. Most apprentices are able to fully install most products on their own within eight months.

The event is free to attend however; a ticket is required to gain entry. There are just 150 places available, tickets cost £20 and will be refunded in full on arrival.
