Heartstrings: Teaching With Affect Cynthia Kiepert, WMEA State Chair, Orchestra


February was the perfect month to write about the “af- fect” in music edu- cation. In the early part of February we were surrounded by chocolate, flowers and romantic mov- ies that pull at your


heartstrings with music at the center of these films helping drive each story home. What is it? What is the outcome that movie producers and directors want? What do we educators want for our students? What would I like to have the students in the orchestra class discover and how much guidance will they need for the affective outcomes that I desire for them? These are questions I ask myself all of the time for each individual student, at every level, for each different classroom at every different school where I teach.


All students learn differently and have their own set of needs when striving for knowledge and learning. Some students hunger for competition or want to be the best, some would rather collaborate and learn from their teacher and fellow
