from the desk of the executive director Wisconsin School Music Association:
Governance Structure Timothy J. Schaid, Executive Director
By the time this ar- ticle reaches you, many of you will be quite busy preparing students for WSMA State Solo & Ensem- ble Festivals, end of the year assessment performances (con- certs) and everything
else that needs to be taken care of prior to school dismissing for the summer recess! All of us at WSMA wish nothing but the best for you and your students while clos- ing out the 2016-17 school year.
In the January 2017 issue of Wisconsin School Musician (WSM), I included an article that talked about ways you might consider becoming more involved in WSMA as a music educator from a WSMA member school. Piggybacking off
that article, I thought it might be interest- ing to familiarize you with the governance structure of WSMA. Understanding the WSMA governance structure may help you to know how and with whom you should communicate if you have a con- cern, question or an idea for improving WSMA programs and services.
All decisions regarding WSMA program- ming, rules, policies, school classifica- tions, etc., are made solely by the WSMA Board of Directors, which includes elected principals and superintendents from WSMA member schools, one in each of the 10 WSMA regions across Wiscon- sin (see page 4). There are other voting members of the board, which consist of representatives from Wisconsin Music Educators Association, the Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin As- sociation of School Boards and parents.
“Understanding the WSMA governance structure may help you to know how and with whom you should communicate if you have a concern, question or an idea for improving WSMA programs and services.”

The WSMA Board of Directors has two regular meetings per year, one in June and one in December. The president of the board may call special meetings if deemed necessary.
Nevertheless, the WSMA Board of Direc- tors depends upon the work of WSMA committees so that the board can make “informed” decisions about any recom- mended changes or additions to WSMA programming, rules, policies, school clas- sifications, etc. Please refer to my January 2017 WSM article for a comprehensive overview of each WSMA committee.
WSMA committees depend upon input from teachers at our member schools to help them formulate items for discussion on committee meeting agendas and to field any questions, concerns or ideas for improving WSMA programs and services. Similarly, WSMA staff also depend upon input from teachers at our member schools to help us better understand the needs of students and teachers at those schools.
