orchestra. When students understand this, they know the time period of any given compositions even if it is their first expo- sure to it. These plans help you, the music teacher, create active listening experiences for your students.
The materials provided by the iListenWI committee are NOT a curriculum. Rather, they are intended to be an addition to an already existing curriculum. The target demographic is fifth and sixth grade. How- ever, there are many strategies for middle school grades and applications for lower elementary grades.
I enjoy spending the last few minutes of each music class with a listening lesson. This centers students for returning to their academic classes, and yet stretches their thinking/listening skills. Music listening lessons engage areas of the brain which are involved with paying attention, making predictions, updating events in their mem- ory, forming appreciations, understanding and preferences. Dr. Charles Eloit, former president of Harvard University, said “Music rightly is the best mind trainer.”
Author John Rossel wrote that “Music is the heartbeat of the universe. It reaches

into the outer ramparts of eternity where time and space are nonexistent; it touches the stars and is reflected in the beauty of the galaxy. It is exemplified in the math- ematical precision found in the largest star and the tiniest molecule. Music is emotional. It touches the heart and creates a response with the listener without his being aware of the technique.”
