WMEA News Kati Seiter, WMEA President-Elect WMEA Advocacy Drive-in

On Wednesday, February 8, 21 music educators, administrators, business owners and parents participated in WMEA’s first Advocacy Drive-In that was organized by members of the Wisconsin Advocates for Music Education (WAME) committee. After a brief training at the Madison Con- course Hotel, participants walked to the Wisconsin State Capitol to meet with state senators and state representatives about the implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in Wisconsin. The official “ask” was:

We ASK that the Wisconsin State Legislature coordinate with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to adopt and approve, the “Well-Rounded Education” language from the ‘Every Student Succeeds Act’ (ESSA). This word- ing would replace the present “Core Academic Subjects” that appears on line 16m of Chapter PI 34 in the Teacher Education Program Approval and Licenses document.

Legislators were eager to learn more about ESSA and the “ask.” A total of 14 sena- tors and 15 representatives were met with including eight who are on both education committees.

WASB Resolution

In January, the Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB) presented the State Education Convention. School board members from all over the state at- tend the convention. One member of each school board is selected to be a delegate who sits in on the assembly to vote for various resolutions. On January 19, the delegates passed a resolution proposed by the Waunakee School Board. The resolution was: Substitute the following language for the language of current resolution 3.01(c):

14

(c) recognition that a “well-round- ed education” includes courses, activities and programming in subjects such as English, reading or language arts, writing, science, technology, engineering, math- ematics, foreign languages, civics and government, economics, arts, history, geography, computer science, music, career and techni- cal education, health, physical education, and any other subject as determined by the state or local school district, with the purpose of providing all students access to an enriched curriculum and educa- tional experience.

This resolution supports a strategy to meet educational goals by recognizing the elements of a “well-rounded educa- tion,” which are more consistent with the language of ESSA.

2017 Wisconsin State Music Conference

WMEA is in the planning stages for the 2017 Wisconsin State Music Conference. The morning planning session took place on Saturday, January 7 at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education in Waunakee. Music educators from all over Wisconsin attended either in person or via FaceTime to discuss the session proposals and priori- tize them for this year’s conference.

The theme for this year’s conference is “Well-Rounded with Music.” This theme was generated in response to the language in ESSA. Music is now a stand-alone subject listed as part of a student’s well- rounded education.

This year’s conference will be held October 25-28 in Madison. Mark your calendars now and plan on attending. Please visit wmeamusic.org/conference to register, reserve a hotel room and to find out more information.

WMEA Website

The WMEA website has had a facelift. Check out the newly designed site at wmeamusic.org.

WMEA Elections

The Southwest and Northwest districts will be holding elections for a vice president to represent each area. All Southwest and Northwest WMEA members will receive an electronic ballot for the vice president positions. Please vote for your representa- tive when your email ballot arrives.

WMEA Awards

Before the school year comes to an end, please consider nominating a deserving person for the Community Service Award, Distinguished Administrator Award, Dis- tinguished School Board Member Award and Michael G. George Distinguished Service Award. In addition, the Melvin F. Pontius Creative Sparks in Music Educa- tion Award is an award given to music programs from around the state that have a creative, innovative or imaginative aspect to them. It could be in the classroom, an extension of the classroom or a commu- nity outreach project or relationship. The award application needs a YouTube video upload, which is unlike the other awards. Self-nominations are encouraged. The deadline for all award applications is June 1. Please go to wmeamusic.org/awards for more information and to nominate.

WMEA Membership Project

At the January WMEA Board and Coun- cil meeting, WMEA Membership Chair Terri Felton introduced the membership project to reach out to non-member music educators from around the state. Board and council members have been contacting
