Automating the Separation Science Lab for Economic Diverse Applications


Tuesday 19th April, 2016 at MSD Laboratories, Hoddesdon, Herts


This one day meeting at the pharmaceutical company MSD will focus on specific aspects of automation in the laboratory and extend to the collection and interpretation of the data acquired by the application of automated analytical procedures. Experienced scientists from industries actively developing and applying automated processes will describe how their systems operate and how the very large quantities of data produced is handled in order to distil and deliver reliable knowledge and understanding. Analytical instrument companies have been invited to exhibit and speak on their contribution to this rapidly expanding area of analytical science.


Our speakers currently include:


• Dr. John Hollerton from GlaxoSmithKline, Stevenage, will describe his experiences of working with The Allotrope Foundation on an innovative framework consisting of metadata dictionaries, data standards, and class libraries for managing analytical data throughout its lifecycle.


• Dr. Bob Boughtflower of GlaxoSmithKline will discuss “The automation of sample preparation prior to analysis”


Revolutionary Sample Management Control


MicroSolv’s new Universal-2 Dimensional (U-2D) 96 Well Plate system offers users unprecedented Sample Management Control. The patent pending design allows removal of the ‘rack’ containing precision glass inserts from


the plastic base, enabling easy checking of the individual inserts for bubbles or missed fills, or for transfer to a thermal bath for controlled heating or cooling. Additionally individual glass inserts can be removed and placed into 9mm screw top autosampler vials for storage or for transfer to another instrument platform. • Shimadzu will discuss “Beyond the Chromatography Data System”


• Michael Lopez from Reaction Analytics Inc. will describe the iChemExplorer - a product that enables chemistry to be performed in the HPLC autosampler by addition of heating and stirring at the vial tray. Reaction Analytics software makes it easy to visualise and share the results within the analyst’s organisation.


• Two presentations by in-house MSD scientists will be given describing automating headspace Gas Chromatography (Simon Hamilton) followed by an overview of automation in the early phase pharmaceutical development space.
